CM Manik Saha Urges Grassroots Awareness to Combat Thalassemia in Tripura
Agartala, July 14:
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha today stressed the urgent need for intensified grassroots-level awareness to fight Thalassemia, a hereditary blood disorder that continues to affect hundreds of families across Tripura. Speaking at a state-level awareness programme held at Rabindra Centenary Hall, the Chief Minister appealed to citizens, organizations, and medical professionals to work collectively in preventing the spread of this genetic condition through regular screening and public education.
Currently, Tripura has identified 2,858 Thalassemia patients, underlining the critical need for early diagnosis and enhanced preventive strategies. With no definitive cure available, experts emphasize that genetic screening, pre-marital blood testing, and awareness are the most effective tools to control its transmission.
Rotary Club of Agartala Takes the Lead
Among the organizations making a difference, the Rotary Club of Agartala has emerged as a key partner in this public health campaign. The club, known for its multi-faceted welfare initiatives, is now spearheading awareness drives across the state. From organizing screening camps to promoting pre-marital testing, the Rotary Club is working closely with healthcare professionals and community volunteers to reach more people — especially youth and prospective parents.
Dr. Saha commended such proactive efforts by civil society groups and emphasized that tackling genetic disorders like Thalassemia requires a collaborative approach. He assured that the state government will extend all necessary support to initiatives that aim to minimize the incidence of inherited diseases in Tripura.
A Collective Commitment
The programme brought together a wide range of stakeholders — medical experts, students, social workers, and volunteers — who collectively pledged to spread awareness and promote preventive testing across every district of the state.
Dr. Saha concluded his address by stating, “We can safeguard future generations if we act together now. Awareness, education, and testing are our most powerful tools in the fight against Thalassemia.”
